The United Federation of Planets sends the U.S.S. Enterprise to assist in an important peace negotiation; two of its member planets, Elas and Troyius, have been at war for centuries, but concern has increased due to the recent expansion of the Klingon Empire, which is now approaching the planets' system of Tellun. Captain Kirk is informed that the peace treaty is to be completed by the marriage of the two planets' leaders: the Dohlman of Elas and the leader of Troyius; the Enterprise is to transport the Dohlman to Troyius, allowing her time to learn the duties and customs of that world. But as soon as the Dohlman, Elaan, arrives on board the ship, the arrogant and reluctant bride starts complaining about everything, even throwing furniture around when she is unsatisfied with her room. Then, when Troyian Ambassador Petri attempts to educate Elaan for her forthcoming wedding, the Dohlman stabs him in the back with a knife. Luckily, the wound is not fatal, but Kirk is forced to step in as Elaan's tutor to ensure that the alliance occurs. However, when Elaan begins to cry Kirk touches one of her tears - unaware that they carry an infectious agent which acts as a powerful aphrodisiac. Events become even more complicated when sensors detect a Klingon battle cruiser shadowing the Enterprise, and a saboteur amongst the Elasian party damages the dilithium crystal chamber. With his ship nearly powerless, Kirk must fight against the effect of the Dohlman's tears and find a way to escape the pursuing Klingons...
